DARK MATTER
Presented by Performing Lines WA Studio Underground, State Theatre Centre of WA, MOVE ME Festival 2016
An ocean of rice covers the floor. Five bodies shape and are shaped by a new and unfamiliar world. Driving sound pushes them further, harder…uniting them and driving them apart. How do you react when you’re in unfamiliar territory?
Dark Matter is a stunning multisensory exploration of human displacement and adaptation. Premiering at the 2016 MoveMe Festival at the State Theatre Centre of WA alongside Batsheva Dance Company and Co3, Dark Matter is a visceral collision of movement, cutting-edge digital projection, pulsating live sound and one metric ton of rice.
Dark Matter is non-linear, rapidly shifting the viewer through time and place. It uses micro and macro societal metaphors to represent our natural need to blend in and form new communities.
There are currently 65.3 million displaced people on the planet, who may have a geographical location but are existing in a no-man’s-land; this is where Dark Matter takes place.
Bringing together award-winning artists: choreographer Laura Boynes, visual artist Alexander Boynes, cellist Tristen Parr and five of WA’s best dancers, DARK MATTER was shortlisted for an Australian Dance Award in Independent Dance 2017.
